OneXPlayer 3 shipping update and ROG Xbox Ally X20 guesses: Speedcast notes
Source video. Click to play here, or open it on YouTube.
This Speedcast asked where the ROG Xbox Ally X20 was, then covered a OneXPlayer 3 shipping update and a OneXPlayer controller survey, with two short news items at the end. The host, Kenzou of Gamers’ Generation, was joined by Alex of 2LOUD Tech, Nelly of Gaming Repairs, and Zach of Hand’s Turn.
Big takeaways
- The panel called the X20 situation an announcement of an announcement. Price guesses were opinions: low $1,200s to about $1,500 for a standalone, and about $1,800 to $2,000 for a bundle with glasses. ASUS later confirmed a standalone model.
- Most panelists were doubtful at those prices, though the Ally X still has the best Xbox full screen experience and the microSD Express slot got praise.
- OneXPlayer 3 units were shipping, with a first batch of about 500 reported and quality control problems blamed for part of the delay.
- One panelist said the G3 Extreme in the OneXPlayer 3 looks strong at 20 to 25 W, though not yet tested side by side.
- OneXPlayer’s free custom controller survey drew requests for adjustable stick tension, TMR sticks, better hair triggers, and more.
- The panel advised avoiding cloud-hosted games after a Switch game became unplayable.
Panel topics: X20 guesses and OneXPlayer 3 update
- Where is the X20? A panelist said he signed up for a Best Buy pre-order notification about three weeks earlier and had heard nothing. Kenzou said the X20 would also be sold on its own. ASUS had not confirmed this at the time of recording; it was confirmed later (see the Aug 29 note). The panel called it an announcement of an announcement.
- Price and timing guesses. These were opinions, not reports. Guesses for a standalone X20 ran from the low $1,200s to about $1,500, and for a bundle with glasses from about $1,800 to $2,000. One panelist expected a bundle around October and a standalone in January.
- Would they recommend it? Most were doubtful at those prices. The panel said the Ally X still has the best Xbox full screen experience, and praised the microSD Express slot. Several said a collector or Xbox fan is the main buyer.
- OneXPlayer 3 shipping. Some panelists had received tracking numbers. Kenzou said OneXPlayer blamed quality control problems reported on Reddit for part of the delay, and that a first batch of about 500 units had shipped. The panel preferred catching problems early.
- Low-wattage performance. One panelist who owns an X2 Mini Pro said the G3 Extreme in the OneXPlayer 3 looks strong at 20 to 25 W. He had not yet tested it side by side with his Strix Halo device.
- OneXPlayer controller survey. The panel filled out the survey on air. Requests included adjustable stick tension, better hair triggers, TMR sticks, higher polling rates, extra buttons, and better grip. Kenzou said the controller is free for eligible buyers and could take several months.
- Cloud games and Linux. Kenzou said a cloud-hosted Switch game can no longer be played on the console, because it has to run on servers owned by Nintendo or another company. The panel advised avoiding cloud-hosted games. They also covered a Linux launcher that may add an Xbox library, which Kenzou stressed Microsoft is not behind.
Worth watching if you want the panel’s X20 price guesses before ASUS confirmed the standalone model, or ideas for the OneXPlayer controller.
